Relevance to directing: collaborative work within a team to create a cohesive project that fit a professional brief within a strict deadline. Mostly, i gained experience adapting art to fit a audio-visual project, and gained skills audio recording and shooting b-roll.
This project heavily focused on storytelling through collaboration, which I feel is a strength i have developed that asserts my ability to work in a team, whilst my individual creative work asserts my capacity to convey a strong creative vision, pointing to my aptitude to specialise in directing and continue to develop my creative voice as a director.
About the project...
This purpose of this project was to work alongside the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts to produce a group project in response to some of the artwork in the centre. The actual brief was very broad and allowed us to choose the artwork and the medium with which our overall response would be created, and what each of our roles would be in the piece's production.
Together, we chose to combine podcast and video to create an audiovisual collection of our responses to the theme of Masks, which we were inspired to create by being taken aback by Yinka Shonibare's Hybrid Mask. Created itself in response to Pablo Picasso's own collection of masks, this piece offered an interesting lens into how identity is presented and construed through the outward perceptions of ourselves that we create. These can be out of protection, fear, or fun, and can be formed both consciously and subconsciously, though it is interesting how masks grow as a subconscious thing.
For my part in the piece, I chose to create a piece of creative prose that would be spoken over a narrative b-roll, detailing one individual's experience with masking and how it personally effects them. This piece, in its finished form, became known as Past Personas, and suggested the ways that people can change and construct new masks overtime, and how going back to old places in your life can re-discover these old masks whether it is your intention or not.
Skills I developed:
- working to professional deadlines with a team
- balancing independent and collaborative work
- recording audio
- recording b-roll
- how art interacts and speaks to real life
- how interpretations of art differ based on people's own experiences
The importance of both audio and visuals and how they interact to enhance and invigorate storytelling.
